As many of you know, we love a good metaphor here at Kadie Solutions. Lately, I have had fish and fishing on my mind—probably because we met with this amazing potential client last week (you should go check them out), but as we were working with a client today determining their ideal customer and how to message to them, a metaphor hit me – Good marketing is like fishing.
A good fisherman knows what he wants to catch, where he wants to fish and what bait works. A good fisherman has specific goals and specific solutions—and when they are applied together—said fisherman will eat for days.
So here are the questions we asked ourselves to become (hopefully) better fisherman of new clients:
What do you want to catch?
Who is the specific person you are targeting? What is their title? What keeps them up at night?
Why should you go fishing?
What services and solutions do you provide? Why are you good at what you do?
What kind of fish do you want to catch?
What’s in it for future customers? How are you making their lives better or jobs easier in some way? How are you eliminating their pain by providing solutions?
What bait works?
What messaging do your potential customers engage in? Are they active through social media? Is it more of a direct sale? What sort of messaging do they bite on?
What’s the best fishing spot?
The best fishermen always have secret spots that are consistently loaded with fish. Do you know where your customers are?
Once you have concise answers to those questions, you are preparing to become a knowledgeable fisherman for your business. A good fisherman knows where his best spot is, he knows what time to fish, he knows what he is going to catch and with the right bait, he will be pulling out fish by the bucketloads.
